This past summer I attended a very informative real estate conference. One of the speakers, Eric Blackwell , talked about the idea of making connections online. So many of us get caught up with the idea of commenting on blogs just to get a link or posting miscellaneous information on forums to reach a certain number of posts. Everyone wants more Twitter followers, right? For what? If there is no real connection, then what’s the point?

Since the conference, I have taken it upon myself to try and make the connection when working in real estate. So far, I have been rewarded tenfold. Just recently I had a great conversation with Denver real estate agent Brian Kinkade. What I intended to be a quick twenty minute conversation about drip campaigns turned into an hour and half conversation filled with great information.

We covered things like:

Lead Management services

Good blogs for guest posting

Back linking ideas

Content creation

Drips campaigns

Leads statics comparison

and a number of other topics

All of this information was shared because I wanted to reach out and make the connection with Brian. These connections don’t have to be within your business. I have talked with a number of people who have nothing to do with real estate. Just because I was interested in their business or something they mentioned in a post.

It is so easy to get caught up in publishing that next blog post or updating Twitter with a funny Tweet. At the end of the day it is all about the connections made. If you have questions or just want to share information with me, feel free to contact me . I will be happy to share ideas, information, or even embarrassing lessons learned (that’s the best way to learn some lessons).

At the beginning of this year, I sat down and dedicated myself to improving my Web site’s ranking with the search engine Google. After much reading (books, blog posts, forum posts, etc), I’ve finally come to the realization that there’s no “easy button” for SEO. Now, this doesn’t mean optimizing one’s Web site for search engines can’t be fun, because it can. Google just wants to make sure that you earn that coveted ranking of page one – top 3.

Since the re-dedication of my efforts to improve my site, I have noticed significant improvements in the SERPS. Unfortunately, though, I’m no where where I would like to be for my targeted keywords. After the third quarter review of my site, it turns out I am not even close. What good are clicks to your site if those visitors aren’t interested in what you are selling?

On a recent trip to Denver, I met up with a Denver SEO by the name of Knox. He has helped me put a lot of my efforts into perspective. It’s so easy to lose track of your goals when you’re constantly working at all the things that you think will help you get to page one. Not to mention that if you don’t know the correct things to do, then you could be potentially hurting your site’s ranking. In terms of SEO, focusing on the wrong things also consumes time that you could be using for the correct things. Knox used a great analogy I know will always stick with me. He said “There are millions of ways to travel to Nanaimo, British Columbia. Right now, though, you’re stuck in Detroit.”

As I continue to move forward with my optimization efforts, I’m constantly reminded of the simple fact that there’s no “Easy Button” for SEO. Now, this doesn’t mean I haven’t looked, because I have. This just means that I need to surround myself with the right people who will work with me to help achieve the goals I have for my site and sites. So, here is to meeting new friends, like Knox, who’s willing to take a chance on a random Denver mini Tweetup and to finding the right people to help make SEO a little easier and maybe even fun.
